about

Selected tracks from 2023.

It has been a year, the tenth since this thing got started.

I don't normally say too much in my own voice when representing the label, I tend to just post basic information about releases or gigs and let the music speak for itself. It's probably (definitely) a self confidence thing. For a change though I'd like to say some things about GoldMold.

I started doing this at a time which I felt completely lost. After moving around a lot throughout my childhood and struggling to connect with the people around me - never really feeling like I had any roots. I'm quite an emotionally guarded person and music gave me something to put my emotions into, to put hopes into. Typical teenage stuff. Basically what I'm saying is I wanted to get involved in music, right?

Friends like Lewis and Camy showed me that it could be done. Soon after I moved to Glasgow, Camy put together an EP with his flatmates (Stevie Peebs, Sean and Tam) who became Lovely Ladies - a band who's importance exists only to the narrative of the label and in the hearts of a dozen but who continue to be the most important band in the world to me. After Lovely Ladies came Kings Arms who conveniently morphed into Grand Pricks (Lum, Ben and Chris) shortly after an EP release. Then Polarnecks (Lukas, Innes, Callum and I'm saying Iain too), who spawned Sulka, Death Bed and Bleaks.

That period a decade ago where I met those guys and my now wife were the most significant years of my life. That's when I figured out who I am. Those are my roots. While putting on some gigs and dubbing some tapes we forged friendships that endure as some of the most rewarding parts of my life. These guys (and other friends I've met through the label) make up the people who were among the first to hold my wee girl when she joined us this year. Some were my best men at my wedding. That's what GoldMold is to me - my friends. It's the people I have met, and continue to meet and get to know through it. All of them amazing artists and wonderful people. I love my pals.

This label continues to surprise me and I hope it surprises you every now and then. If you get anything out of it, thank you - it's as much yours as it is mine. People make GoldMold.

Cheers,
Gary.
